Instagram Blocks “#EDM”
“#EDM was being used to share content that violates our guidelines around nudity.”
Instagram has been on a banning binge lately, and a popular music hashtag is the company's latest victim. Last month, #curvy was apparently violating community standards and now they're blocking #EDM (as in electronic dance music). According to an official statement from the company, the hashtag leads to explicit content that violates Instagram's guidelines around nudity.
In a statement to TIME, a rep for Instagram said, "In this case, #EDM was being used to share content that violates our guidelines around nudity."
Now users can't even search the genre on the app—suggested searches for "edmlife," "edmlifestyle." and "edmfamily" all come up instead and each have hundreds of thousands of posts contributed to them. For what it's worth, the hashtag "plur" is still up and thriving.
The ban might not last for long though, #curvy was reinstated once the controversy made headlines and petitions went viral. We can only hope that it will be back in time for the next EDM festival, so we can peep everyone's half-naked selfie-stick pics.
On the real, can we get some Instagram guidelines for appropriation though?
