Stormzy will speaking today at the Oxford Guild, which describes itself as "the UK’s largest and oldest professional society." The Guild has been putting a lot of effort into landing high-profile speakers from the music world: other recent guests include Kanye West and Lil Jon.
"We are delighted to be welcoming to the Oxford Guild such an exciting and high profile a speaker as the one and only Stormzy," Abbas Kazmi, Chairman of the institution, said in a statement. "We’ve had a phenomenal reaction from the student body so far with over 1,200 students balloting for places in under 24 hours of announcing it."
"I was a little smart arse in school lol and my teachers, my mum and even myself were really hoping that I would one day study at Oxford," Stormzy wrote on Instagram. "So to be asked to come down and speak to the gifted students at the uni is a beautiful coincidence. My mums gonna be super proud of this one, your boy didn't get to go Oxford but it all turned out alright in the end."
The MC also stopped by Julie Adenuga's Beats 1 Radio show last week. During a brief interview, he dubbed himself "the dark knight of Beats 1," and then proceeded to freestyle over Charli XCX's recently released "Vroom Vroom." He suggested that Charli is a kindred spirit: "I feel like I know her because she's bubbly; she's a bit mad."
