52% of the U.K. population has voted to leave the E.U.. Prime Minister David Cameron, who led the remain campaign, has resigned following the result. The country voted in the June 23 referendum and results overnight show that over half the country opted to leave the union. 48% of the country voted to remain, with London, Scotland and Northern Ireland backing staying in. 75% of people aged 18-24 also voted that way.
BBC News reports that the pound fell to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985 following the news, as the markets react to the result. Announcing his decision to step aside by October 2016, Cameron said he will "steady the ship" over the coming months but that "fresh leadership" is needed.
