Chrisette Michele has been criticized by the likes of Spike Lee and Questlove after performing at a Trump inauguration event last week. Since January 20 she has responded in song, releasing "No Political Genius." Today, January 25, she appeared on The Breakfast Club where she was quizzed on her decision to perform for the new President. She offered her take on the situation and also responded to Spike Lee's decision to ban the singer's music in his upcoming Netflix series, Black Girl Magic.
"I needed them to see us," Michele said in response to Charlamagne's question about her reasons for appearing in Washington. "I needed them to see what we have to say, what we look like, how we talk. With the entire campaign experience I think many of us were wondering, 'Who is he talking to?' You would hear something and you would say, 'Why does he think it's OK to talk to "us" like that?' So I needed him to see what "us" looks like because I was as confused as everybody else."
