Apple Music has announced Up Next, a new series profiling up-and-coming artists through documentaries, live sessions, and interviews. Atlanta's 6LACK is the first subject of the series, and he recently sat down with Zane Lowe to discuss his start as a battle rapper, his influences, and his dream collaborations.
"I kinda feel like battle rap gave me all the tools I needed to write songs today," 6LACK told Lowe. "Battle rap is about how much you can say and putting so many different words and expressions together to get your point across and songwriting is like how can i get that same point across but by saying less." During the interview, he revealed that, before either of them had garnered any fame, he battled Young Thug.
6LACK also spoke about the inspirations behind "PRBLMS," his breakout hit: "I remember that night everyone was getting ready to go out that night and I just got a text that said, 'I hate you.' And showing everybody that was like this is crazy but there was a constant stream of crazy messages coming through and they were like, 'You need to put that into a song.'"
