Sunday night's Golden Globes were a vision of a better Hollywood future. Actors including Meryl Streep and Emma Stone brought activists as their dates while everybody showed solidarity with the Time's Up campaign by dressing in all-black. However, some tropes of the movie and TV business were still evident and shouted loudly of the mountain of work still to be done in the industry. This was no more obvious than on the category of Best Director of a Motion Picture. Presented directly after Oprah's powerful speech, the award was contested entirely by male nominees (and was won by Guillermo Del Toro for The Shape Of Water). Presenter Natalie Portman made sure this didn't pass without comment, taking a hit at the prize before reading out the nominees alongside co-host (and male movie director) Ron Howard.
