“Toxic Talk Show” appears on the Montreal experimental duo’s upcoming album Beyond XXXL
Freak Heat Waves are an experimental duo from Montreal that never gets too serious: the band's previous album Bonnie's State of Mind explored post-punk and krautrock with a breeziness that exuded charisma and skill. "Toxic Talk Show," a song from the band's upcoming LP Beyond XXXL, is a scuzzy synth-driven vortex, the sound of a five-alarm fire on an alien spacecraft. The track's video, premiering today on The FADER, is an exquisite animated clip by Dr. Cool. Two tigers escape from jail and, later, the plains of our reality, all in a frenetic five minutes that fans of Superjail will love.
Dr. Cool told us about the video over email, but not too much:
"The video is mostly hand-drawn frame by frame animation and then some of it's done in this other secret way that I can't reveal. It took a really long time to make. The bands only request was that I make the video crazier than the song. It's really heavy stuff! People have asked if the two tigers are supposed to be Thomas and Steve from the band but obviously it's not... I'm not THAT bad at drawing! Hehe."
