Grimes clarifies: “I don’t support donating to Republicans”
The musician defended boyfriend Elon Musk’s political donations to fans via Twitter.
Grimes's relationship with SpaceX founder Elon Musk was placed under scrutiny by fans on Wednesday when the musician tweeted a defence of her boyfriend in the wake of news that he donates large sums of money to GOP groups.
A report published earlier this month stated Musk gave $38,900 to a political committee that supports House Republicans. It is also reported that he has donated seven times as much to Republican groups than Democrats since 2017. Musk defended himself on July 21, tweeting that he is “not a conservative” and contributes to both parties to “maintain dialogue.”
Nevertheless, Grimes has been fielding tweets from fans about Musk's political motives. On Wednesday she responded to one, telling him that aerospace companies like SpaceX must make these donations "in order to function."
“every aerospace company has to donate to republicans in order to function," she tweeted. "in fact most major companies across the board do, in some capacity. it’s the price of doing business in america. e donates way more money, like absurdly more, to environmental causes.”

When mutliple news sources began reporting on Grimes's tweet, she clarified her stance and made it clear that she was explaining how business and politics co-exist but not stating that she condones this practise.

She also tweeted directly at music sites NME and Stereogum, as well as telling Consequence of Sound "I don’t support donating to republicans."
