The CW announced on Tuesday that Ruby Rose has been selected to play Batwoman in an upcoming series, The Hollywood Reporter points out. Rose will first appear as Batwoman in an upcoming DC crossover event slated for December, with a Batwoman stand alone series (planned by Arrow writer and creator Greg Berlanti) in the works. Writing the show's script will be Vampire Diaries executive producer Caroline Dries.
The announcement comes after CW reportedly made casting an openly gay actress for the role of Batwoman a priority. The network's roster of superhero's now includes a lesbian actress playing a lesbian superhero, and — after recently casting Nicole Maines on the upcoming Supergirl series — a trans actress playing a trans superhero.
