Calypso legend Calypso Rose has delivered everything from feminist anthems to tongue-in-cheek tunes in the genre for over 60 years, and her latest — a visual for the Walshy Fire-produced remix of her single “Young Boy” featuring soca heavyweight Machel Montano — proves she has no plans of slowing down.
Not only did the already upbeat single gets a EDM-tinged, horn-heavy spin to match the song’s playful lyrics about reveling in romance no matter your age, but the clip puts you in the middle of the revelry, pulsing bass lines and freedom of this year’s carnival celebrations in Trinidad & Tobago.
Last month, she took the stage at Coachella to perform her decades-long back catalogue — making the 79-year-old Tobagonian the oldest performer in the festival’s history and its first calypsonian. Her lively set saw appearances from Montano and Walshy on the first weekend, while emerging soca artist Nailah Blackman — granddaughter of the genre’s godfather, Lord Shorty — would join her during the festival’s second. "[It] was a fantastic experience for me and my band. To see all these young people gyrating and dancing on my music gave me so much energy,” she told The FADER via email. “Machel and Walshy on stage set the place on fire!”
