Toronto singer-songwriter Mustafa shared the gripping video for his latest single "The Hearse," the fourth from his upcoming album When Smoke Rises. Following powerful releases like "Ali," "Air Forces" and "Stay Alive," his latest continues to center his close-knit community as they grapple with the depths of grief and loss.
On Wednesday, Mustafa joined Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 to discuss the track, as well as the importance of his forthcoming album—named in memory of close friend, late rapper Smoke Dawg—to his own healing. "I feel relieved. I think for so long I was writing these songs, and I was attempting to write these songs, and they just wouldn't come out," he told Lowe. "I didn't want to see this manifestation of my pain. I think I had to write these songs in order to look beyond these songs. It was only in completing these songs that now I'm able to look beyond them, and look at what those songs post-grief look like, and post-loss, and post-mourning."
When Smoke Rises drops on May 28.
