Erykah Badu will play a small role in The Piano Lesson, an upcoming Netflix movie starring Samuel L. Jackson, Danielle Deadwyler, and John David Washington, Variety and Deadline report.
The Piano Lesson is an adaptation of the August Wilson play of the same name. Netflix has history with Wilson's work, having adapated Ma Rainey's Black Bottom in 2020. Jackson and Washington starred in a recent Broadway revival of The Piano Lesson and will reprise their roles for the movie version.
Badu is said to have a musical role in the movie, which is set in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1936, and follows the lives of the Charles family, owners of the titular piano, a family heirloom that tells the family's history through a series of carvings made by an enslaved ancestor.
This summer Badu will embark on a North American arena tour. Yasiin Bey will open for Badu across the 25-date "Unfollow Me" tour. The neo-soul singer also brought out her own range of weed rolling cones in time for Mother's Day.
