In spite of the fact that they haven’t released an album together in 17 years, Outkast — the Atlanta duo of Andre 3000 and Big Boi — continue to cement their place as one of the best hip-hop groups to ever do it. Last Friday (September 29), their 2003 LP Speakerboxxx/The Love Below became the best-selling rap album of all time, certified 13x platinum with 13 million units sold. It surpassed Eminem’s 2002 The Eminem Show, which went 12x platinum last year.
“Over 13 Million albums sold (Diamond & a 3.5),” Big Boi wrote on Instagram. (An album is certified “diamond” after going 10x platinum.) “Outkast is everlasting. Stank You Smelly Much …To All Y’all 🛸.”
Speakerboxxx/The Love Below celebrated its 20-year anniversary on September 23. Listen to the album below and revisit The FADER’s 2000 Outkast cover story here.
