Solange says she’s started writing music for the tuba

Solange is the subject of a lengthy new cover story in Harper’s Bazaar. It’s an interesting read, with Solange speaking about her myriad artistic projects, which include a glassware line and becoming just the second Black woman to compose a score for New York City Ballet. Steve Lacy pops up, too, revealing that Solange decorated his home (he describes it as “Clean, futuristic, classic, Black”).

Naturally, Solange fans will be wondering if the subject of new music came up during the conversation, and the answer is yes… kind of. Writer Kaitlyn Greenidge notes that she chose to “carefully avoid” asking the question outright and, instead, asked Solange what sounds she currently is obsessed with. The answer was surprising, with Solange answering “the tuba.”

The obsession runs past just listening to others: Solange has been writing music for the brass instrument. “I love it,” she says. “I’ve started writing music for the tuba, and I am trying to talk myself into releasing it, but I can only imagine the eye rolls from people being like, this bitch hasn’t made an album.” She might have a point, but people warmed to André 3000‘s flute album pretty quickly.

“It sounds like what the gut feels like to me,” Solange added about her newfound passion. “There’s a way that it takes up space that you can’t deny, and it also just feels very Black to me.”

Solange’s most recent album was 2019’s When I Get Home. Last year, she curated BAM’s spring performance series.
