Austin: Deerhunter+No Age=Besties!

March 20, 2007

Last Friday afternoon we slipped across highway 35 to check out Vice's situation on 11th Street. David Yow's new band Qui cancelled, so the young dudes of Atlanta's Deerhunter got upgraded to the outdoor stage. Since most folks in the crowd were mellowing out on the grass hippie style, the band responded with a set of echoey trance rock, before catching the beat at the end with "Cryptograms." Dean and Randy of Los Angeles's No Age made their way up front for the performance and Deerhunter's lead-singer Bradford Cox told the audience to check them out at the Long Branch Inn across the street next (thanks for the advice, but we were already down!). When playing, No Age's ratio of smiles to intensity is kind of amazing and totally unfounded and after they played a set of incredibly loud, inspiring music we scraped our brains off the floor. Then the guys from Deerhunter came over to get their cellphone numbers and buy T-shirts from them. Bands that are friends are adorable.
