(RED)'s already renowned for their efforts to end AIDS in Africa, but The Lazarus Effect is a landmark foray into AIDS awareness for a kooky big-screen maven and a music video director. Executive produced by Spike Jonze and directed by Lance Bangs, the documentary follows four HIV-positive people who undergo a miraculous recovery after receiving treatment—one woman describes her transformation as "like being resurrected," hence the Lazarus reference. The drugs, which cost a mere 40 cents a day, symbolize a real sense of hope for those with HIV and AIDS, and this documentary embodies that new chance for a full life—and ideally its association with the subculture-hero directors will help introduce new people to (RED)'s work. Watch the trailer above, and see the entire film tonight at 9PM EST on HBO, YouTube and Channel 4 in the UK.
