MJ Cole DJed New York a few months ago and did not play much UK garage. It felt weird, since he built his reputation on godfathering the sound—did he think it wouldn't translate? Why was he playing "Pon di Floor"?—but his propulsive, bassy mix for Dummy mag sheds some light on that. In retrospect, it's just that dude is simply never trying to be boxed into a corner, no matter what he's done in the past, always choosing tracks with adventurous hearts and mixing them with the steady hand of a surgeon. Also, about 10 minutes in he drops a twitchy take on "Sex Sax" that feels like getting punched in the face and it is awesome!
