Video: Bon Iver, “Calgary”

June 15, 2011

In The New York Times Magazine's recent profile of Justin Vernon, the much-studied Wisconsinite behind Bon Iver, Vernon describes the lyrics on his new record as "so unspecific that I’m not actually going to use words that have specific meanings," which helps explain the almost-total ambiguity of this "Calgary" video. Sometimes there's a tree with a dozen books nailed to it and sometimes an upside down bear and almost always people underground. It's all lukewarmly evocative, making sense to somebody but not nearly as gripping as it is if you just close your eyes and listen to the song. Bon Iver's sophomore album comes out next week on Jagjaguwar.
