Right when it started getting hot, I put on Ensemble Economique’s Live in London cassette, and then proceeded to sweat and have a series of mental freakouts for like an hour. I was not on drugs! The thing that Ensemble Economique do so well is create this constant, droning sense of dread. The music builds and builds and then never really explodes into anything but more buildup. That might sound unsatisfying, but it is absolutely not. "Radiate Through" is a great example of the way they're able to build and layer until their music feels like the darkest part of a John Carpenter soundtrack on loop. You could call this music difficult if it wasn't so endlessly enjoyable to get lost in. This video is terrifying.
