Artist Mickalene Thomas Makes Furry Desert Boots

February 20, 2013

Artist Mickalene Thomas, known for large scale canvases full of blinged-out black women, has teamed up with the Swakopmund-based shoemakers Brother Vellies, formerly known as Schier Shoes, to lend her colorful steez to the homespun footwear brand. The five-piece capsule collection features the same handmade desert boots, known as vellies, that Brother is famous for, with jazzed up mixed prints, tufts of spring bok fur and regal ostrich hides that look like wearable updates of artist Meret Oppenheim's furry teacup. The Mickalene Thomas for Brother Vellies are available at The Proposition Gallery, as part of the Thomas' Decopolis: The Talent of Others pop-up shop, where you can sit in one of Thomas' signature nostalgic 1970s installations and try-on a pair of the shoes.

Read more about the traditional African shoe, the vellie, in our profile of Schier Shoes from last year.
