There's something fantastically restrained about Kode9's new 12-inch cut "Xingfu Lu." It jumps from half-time to double-time and from one syncopated rhythm to another as though it were simply inching its way along a train track, offering up the occasional small climax in the form of loaded pause, or the temporary melodic resolution of an off-kilter melody line. It's the first original song that Hyperdub label head Steve Goodman has put out in two years, and we're not sure why he named it after a street in Shanghai, but it's hard to imagine a weirder and more exciting comeback. Xingfu Lu is out digitally and on wax on April 29th.
