"Ache" is the gut-splitting second missive from Abandon, the first widely distributed release from New York power electronics artist Pharmakon, aka Margaret Chardiet. Like "Crawling on Bruised Knees," the first, it's built on a foundation of screeching ambience and bruising bass tones, punctuated in the upper registers by Chardiet's floodgates-opening screams. Compared to the earlier track's chorus pedal trill, these sound particularly naked and exposed, as though Pharmakon were inviting us listeners to explore the full, devastating spectrum of how the human voice— pushed to its limits—can crack.
