The original version of Australian producer Roland TIngs’ "Cagean Sea" is smooth to the point that the track's edges feel blurred and softened, like they're not even there. It feels like staring at an infinity pool. Washington, DC-based Maxmillion Dunbar of the Future Times crew made a remix that keeps some of that initial sun-streaked vibe, dragging out a pillowy synth line that starts uneasy but then becomes an essential background element as he introduces all sorts of clattering, sometimes aggressive percussion. Essentially it sounds like what would happen if you blinked and then the infinity pool turned into a scummy SoCal backyard pool, complete with a couple burnouts smoking ditch weed. Basically, it's more rugged than the original, but both versions work just fine on their own. Roland Tings' "Tomita's Basement/Cagean Sea" 12-inch is out right now on Club Mod.
