Even though it’s the middle of summer, I still imagine Spooky Black bobbing his durag-covered head alone in the snowy forest of St. Paul, Minnesota, perpetually in the winter of his own discontent. Four months ago he dropped his Black Silk mixtape, an unprecedentedly beautiful collection of minimalistic dark electro-backed rap tracks which lit up the internet. His latest addition is “reason,” co-produced by his crew THESTANDARD and The Weeknd's "Wicked Games" producer Doc McKinney (aka Doc). Spooky's panty-melting vocals are underpinned by his emotional vulnerability, and he’s especially frail in “reason,” urging his lover again to cut him open: I see the blade in your hand, what you waiting for? But it’s really Spook that’s cutting all our hearts open.
