Cubby: “”Rome and Maco are two of the most fearless artists I know. I spent 36 sleepless hours with them in Atlanta on what felt like a spaceship.”

While Brooklyn-based producer Cubby's new track "Jungle" may not have many of the ragga-inflected formal qualities of the UK style that shares its name, it definitely partakes of its frenetic, splintering energy. Unsurprisingly, Cubby told us the time he spent with Atlanta-based vocalists Rome Fortune (with whom Cubby has worked before) and OG Maco (the artist behind the visceral "U Guessed It") recording this giddy, banging track was pretty crazy: "Rome and Maco are two of the most fearless artists I know. I spent 36 sleepless hours with them in Atlanta on what felt like a spaceship. Everything was instinctual. Nobody asked questions. It was total trust from the very beginning. And completely incredible. None of us knew where the other was gonna go next, but every time it was somewhere we'd never been." That experimental, communal attitude reflects in the track's composition: flipping from rattling, squiggly drum breaks to head-bobbing, jazzy chords, the beat sounds as excited about working with rappers as the rappers do about working with it. It's the first single from Cubby's upcoming mixtape, Pieces, which drops sometime next week.
