Is “Sarah” The Best Alex G Song?
Stream an unreleased bonus track from Lucky Number’s remastered version of ‘Trick.’
"Sarah" is one of those untethered Alex G songs that got passed around like a secret. He doesn't play it live, and it's not on BandCamp. Still, the half-asleep love song surfaced on Tumblr and on burned CD-Rs and popped up in the background of fan-made YouTube videos. One could argue that it's the best unreleased Alex G song, better than "Nintendo 64" or even "Be Kind," but that seems to me like—and I'll quote Björk out of context here—choosing between ice cream and cake. I will say that the double-tracked vocal coda is so pretty that it's almost hard to listen to: We'll spit on all the happy clowns that live around her sunny town/ she loves me like a dog and when we mess around I'll let her know the truth I found. Sigh.
According to an email to FADER, Alex wrote "Sarah" around the time he was putting together his 2012 tape, Trick. So it makes sense, then, that UK label Lucky Number is giving it its space to shine as a remastered bonus track on their forthcoming release of that album; it's out April 6th and up for pre-order now.
