Destruction Unit Got Kicked Out Of A Restaurant While Filming The “Final Flight” Video
It also features the director’s 59-year-old uncle doing tai chi.
We're well aware that Destruction Unit puts on an intense live show, and the new video for "Final Flight" from 2013's Deep Trip celebrates that wild, effects-heavy abrasiveness with dissociative fade outs and a muted color pallette. It was directed by Hollywood-based artist Cali Thornhill DeWitt (who was recently highlighted in our preview of the LA Art Book Fair) and filmed on location in Joshua Tree, where the Arizona five-piece hilariously played a show inside a restaurant filled with families: kids, parents, grandparents. "About halfway through, the restaurant was empty," the band told FADER in an email. "By the third song in the set, the owner had kicked us out. One guy loved it, and gave us an ounce of weed he'd grown himself."
The video, which unfolds like an edgy shroom high, also stars DeWitt's 59-year-old uncle, who's starting to become a pretty recognizable character in the punk world in his own right; "Uncle Vic" also recently made a cameo in Iceage's "The Lord's Favorite" video. "He was my assistant on the 'Final Flight' shoot," DeWitt said over email. "He lives in my backyard and seems to have figured out most of life's mysteries." Some related good news: after a tour around the South and Midwest (dates below), Destruction Unit will head into the studio to record the full-length follow up to Deep Trip; look out for that sooner than later on Sacred Bones.
