UPDATE 5/3/15 10.37 a.m.: The campaign officially ended yesterday, having raised a total of $600,874 from 11,869 backers, becoming the second most funded project on Kickstarter. Woah. De La Soul wrote a thank you note for their backers, claiming that they had gained not only a financial boost but "a clearer insight into how you feel about us as a group and what we do. You have helped directly play a part in giving us the much needed creative fuel by showing that we still matter to all of you!"
UPDATE 3/31/15 12:27 p.m.: Wow: in 24 hours, De La Soul have already funded the Kickstarter for their new album. Congrats, guys!
As seems to be de rigueur for heritage acts these days, legendary hip-hop trio De La Soul has launched a Kickstarter campaign to finance what will be their first studio album in more than a decade. The new record will be—like the bulk of their catalog—sample-based; but because of past complications, this time around the group plans to sample only their own music and new material recorded during "free-styled, unrehearsed jam sessions" over the past three years. The project will also feature Damon Albarn, David Byrne, 2 Chainz, Little Dragon—and anyone else who is willing to pledge $7,500. Head this way to donate.
