In case you were wondering just how Brooklyn DonMonique is, her latest song begins with an interpolation of a Jay Z lyric from "Jigga What, Jigga Who." Motherfuckers wanna act loco?/ Hit 'em with numerous shots, nigga, she spits. Ironically released the same day the New York Times suggested that the gentrification of Brooklyn is moving even deeper into the borough, the East New York rapper's chest-beating "Jada" sounds nothing like an invitation into her neighborhood.
Listening to the dark, shadowy track, produced by fellow New Yorker Stelios Phili, you can almost hear her baring her teeth through Soundcloud. "Jada" is a distinctly less playful iteration of the confident but cheeky persona DonMonique first teased on "Pilates (Kendall, Kylie, Miley)" earlier this year, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. The track ends fittingly with a sample of Jada Pinkett's infamous scene in Set It Off: "You're acting real stupid. You need to get that gun out of my face," growls Willow's mom.
