Watch Amy Winehouse Record “Back To Black” With Mark Ronson
Amy hits wide-release screens in the U.S. on Friday.
The rollout for Asif Kapadia’s Amy Winehouse documentary has been slow and artful. Clips dribble onto the internet one by one while the director hits the promo circuit. It’s worked well so far: Billboard reported earlier this week that the film’s opening weekend in the U.K. marked the “biggest opening for a homegrown documentary” ever. (The only doc to pass it was Michael Moore’s Farenheit 9/11.)
Today another clip hit the internet in advance of the movie's America-wide opening on Friday. (It's already playing in NYC and L.A.) This is the meatiest footage yet: Amy Winehouse in the studio with the famously neurotic producer Mark Ronson laying down the vocal tracks for “Back To Black,” the title track from Winehouse’s Grammy-winning album. “It was just one of those serendipitous things—I just caught her at that magic moment,” says Ronson. “She was just ready to get it going, that’s why I couldn’t understand what everyone else was saying about this procrastinating, troubled artist.”
