Get Into The Sad Groove Of British Duo Fine Print’s “Can’t Lie”

An anti-love song disguised as shimmering falsetto funk.

July 20, 2015

UK duo Fine Print dug deep into their record collections for inspiration for their upcoming self-titled EP, and you can hear it in the dusty, light-edged funk of their new single. "Before we started on 'Can’t Lie' we had been having quite long conversations about the hip hop we loved," the band explained to The FADER over email. "Especially the dusty sounding productions from people like Buckwild, MF Doom, Madlib and of course Dilla. While vocally referencing people like Cornell Cambell and Curtis Mayfield." The result is a melancholy groove: with a Rhye-like falsetto and prickly guitar licks, the song rakes over the debris of a failing relationship, lamenting: How am I supposed to try, when this just seems up to you?...You never were elusive before.
