Listen To A Cathartic Break-Up Song From Wax Idols’ New Album
American Tragic drops in October.
Wax Idols is the goth rock project fronted by Hether Fortune, a California singer-songwriter who sometimes tours as a member of White Lung. The newest album under the Wax Idols umbrella, American Tragic, is out October 16th via Geoff Rickly's Collect Records label, and today, we're premiering "Lonely You," a sturdy-voiced breakup jam that may or may not be about Fortune grappling with her recent divorce. It lives in a grim, melodic sweet spot between total bummer and feel-good sing-a-long, with a hook that sounds better suited for fist-pumping post-trauma than wallowing in the thick of it.
"It was initially written as a stand-alone poem," Fortune told FADER over email. "But I couldn't get it out of my head, so it found its way into a song. It's basically as a breakup vehicle, traveling first through loss and longing, then lingering for a moment in nostalgia before finally reaching acceptance and then transcendence. Loneliness can be both sad and empowering. Ultimately, it's up to you."
