Stream Dougie F’s Reflective Block Party Mixtape
“Maturing off the block with that same Friday mentality embed in us, we carried that to wherever we went.”
Orange's own Dougie F rose to prominence within the Jersey Club scene on the weight of his lean anthem "Back Up On It." The Mad Decent rapper has his eye on something bigger, but he will always have one foot rooted in the block he came up on. Premiering today on The FADER is his latest, a sonically varied mixtape called Block Party that finds him drawing a line between his then ("Wilson Place," "That Was Backthen") and his now ("Diamonds Dancing," "Billions").
"From the block to the world—that's how I see my life and my music," he wrote To The FADER, in an email in which he went on to describe the meaning of the project's title: "The projects was rough for anyone but Fridays made it all worth the struggle it seems. Fridays always felt like a block party. That's when everyone was outside not looking past the day because it was a feeling we wanted to last forever. It was an escape for the adults they wild out, gambled, made sells, fought, got drunk and high. As a kid it was more so about staying out late, not having school in the AM, seeing all the wild shit that goes on in the hood, being mischief, chasing girls and just doing kid shit. As we got older we began to worry about clothes, music, and money. Maturing off the block with that same Friday mentality embed in us, we carried that to wherever we went."
It's almost Friday, so go ahead and give this a spin below.
