Materialists is the new A24 movie by Celine Song, who made her debut with the Oscar-nominated Past Lives. Like that movie, Materialists also centers around a love triangle with Dakota Johnson, playing a New York City matchmaker who must decide between two men: a suave and rich businessman played by Pedro Pascal and her ex, a regular but imperfect guy who seems to truly love her (played by Chris Evans).
If it sounds like a classic romcom then that's by design, Materialists seems to be very much in the vein of similarly smart, weepy, romantic, and rewatchable movies like When Harry Met Sally and Notting Hill, but updated to tap into modern dating red flags, like guys who only want to date women 20+ years their junior.
The first trailer for the movie landed today and features a new song from Japanese Breakfast. It's a song that won't appear on Michelle Zauner's forthcoming album, For Melancholy Brunettes (and Sad Women), due for release later this month.
Materialists, which also stars Zoe Winters, Marin Ireland, Dasha Nekrasova, and Louisa Jacobson among others, will be in theaters from June 13, 2025.
