"Lazarus" is an ambling funk track: the rhythm section locks into a groove; a horn section slides in and out. Occasionally shards of electric guitar burst through the song's placid surface. Bowie's vocals suggest a man unhinged: Look up here, I'm in danger/ I've got nothing left to lose/ I'm so high it makes my brain whirl. I'll be free, he concludes. Ain't that just like me?
