For Kehlani, crafting a distinctive sound has taken priority over charting a radio single. But Friday she hopped onto a remix of "In 2," a delightful, FADER-premiered earworm that's been climbing charts in the U.K. and Australia since the fall, and was played on OVO Sound's Beats 1 show back in October. The song belongs to West London trio WSTRN, who like Kehlani blend rap with R&B, and are signed to Atlantic. After a Grammy nomination and with a debut album on the way, I'd presume Kehlani's label and radio programmers alike are eager to bring her self-defined brand into the center of pop. She sounds great here, and it's a promising sign that she'll be strong enough to stay true to herself, even with that growing demand.
