Today on Pharrell and Scott Vener's Beats 1 show OTHERtone, Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange) joined the two to explain his writing process.

The clip, shared by Pharrell's organization iamOTHER, started with Hynes explaining the inspiration behind the first track of his latest release Freetown Sound, entitled "By Ourselves." After explaining that the original inspiration came from a poem, Ashlee Haze's "For Colored Girls (The Missy Elliott Poem)," Hynes emulates some Charles Mingus improvisations that also helped shape the song.
