Rhymefest Shares Video Of Police Mistreatment While Reporting A Robbery
The Chicago Police Department has since issued an apology to the hip-hop artist.
On August 28, Chicago hip-hop artist Rhymefest (born Che Smith) was robbed at gunpoint in the Chicago neighborhood of Bronzeville. When the two-time Grammy winner tried to report the robbery, the officers at Chicago Police Department’s Grand Crossing district station turned him away.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Smith sat down with an officer who didn't seem to believe his story. Eventually, Smith grew angry at her inability to take him seriously and began filming the interaction. Smith went to Twitter to share the short clip, which features an arguing match between him and several officers.
"When I walked through the door, and she asked me what was wrong, she kept eating, she kept playing Candy Crush," Smith recounts in the video.
Smith also shared his feelings about his mugger, tweeting that he was not mad, but rather hurt. "To the young brother that put the gun to my head this morning & took my wallet. You don't know how you just damaged your community," Smith writes.
Saturday afternoon, a representative for the Chicago PD has apologized to Smith, calling it "disappointing to say the least." View the entire statement below.
