When Drake first released "Pop Style" it featured verses from both Kanye West and Jay Z. The Watch The Throne reunion didn't last long though, with both artists disappearing from the cut of "Pop Style" that ended up on VIEWS when it was released in April.
Kanye's Saint Pablo tour stopped off in Seattle last night, October 19, and he included "Pop Style" in his setlist, as he has at various dates on the run. Before he started the song he took the chance to explain why he and Jay Z aren't on VIEWS, pointing the finger at "bullshit" between Apple Music and Tidal, as well as Jay Z wanting out of the feature as a show of respect for Meek Mill.
"Y'all didn't get, what y'all were supposed to get with me and Drake on this song because of some Tidal/Apple bullshit," Kanye said. "Every time I perform this song I think about this shit. I think about the politics. I think about how hard I go for music, for art, for y'all."
Going into the origins of the feature, Kanye added that it was only meant to feature him at first. "I start freestyling to it. Jay thought of a couple of lines. I said, 'Just go ahead, throw that on there. He'll be so surprised, he probably won't expect you to be on there.'" he explained to the Seattle crowd. "We sent it back to him and he was like, 'Oh shit, The Throne is on this shit.' Then Jay thought about it, and out of respect to Meek Mill he didn't want to be on the track. I said, 'We've got to squash this shit and let people have this song.' But then it went into some political shit, some shit about percentages on songs."
Kanye added that he can't see a second Watch The Throne album happening while the streaming services are at odds with each other. Watch fan footage from the Seattle show below to hear him give his full explanation.
