Sevyn Streeter Says The 76ers Prevented Her From Singing The National Anthem For Wearing A “We Matter” Jersey
The singer spoke on the incident via Twitter tonight.
In a video released Wednesday night via her Instagram and Twitter, Sevyn Streeter says she was prevented from singing the National Anthem at tonight's game in Philadelphia between the 76ers and Thunder.
In the clip, the singer says she was slated to sing the anthem, but was prevented from doing so by the organization because she was a wearing a jersey reading "We Matter."
Streeter's announcement comes just days after NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced that the league's "expectation is that players will stand" for the anthem. The announcement did, however, come as part of a broader discussion between the league and its players about how to create meaningful change around social justice issues.
Reps for the 76ers and Sevyn did not immediately respond to The FADER's request for comment.
