Watch President Obama’s Heartfelt Tribute To Michelle During His Farewell Address
“A new generation sets its sights higher because it has you as a role model.”
President Obama gave an emotional, stirring speech for his farewell address tonight, reflecting on his eight years in office and outlining an optimistic, broadly inclusive vision for the future of the country. During the speech, Obama also spoke to the people closest to him, including a teary-eyed tribute to FLOTUS herself, Michelle Obama.
"Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, girl of the South Side," Obama began, "for the last 25 years, you have not only been my wife and the mother of my children, you have been my best friend. You took on a role you didn't ask for and you made it your own, with grace and with grit and with style."
After a long pause for applause, and to dry his eyes, the President continued, "You made the White House a place that belongs to everybody. And a new generation sets its sights higher because it has you as a role model."
