Watch The Moonlight Team Accept The Oscar For Best Picture
The Barry Jenkins-directed film is a coming-of-age story about a young gay boy in Miami.
At Sunday's 89th Academy Awards ceremony, Barry Jenkins's Moonlight, the stunning coming-of-age film about a young black boy growing up in Miami, took home the Oscar for Best Picture. The film has been a fan favorite and won up against Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, Lion, Manchester by the Sea, and La La Land — which was mistakenly announced as the winner at first.
"Very clearly, even in my dreams, this could not be true,” said Jenkins in his acceptance speech, viewable above. “But to hell with dreams, I’m done with it, ‘cause this is true.”
Moonlight’s producer Adele Romanski added: “It’s very humbling to be up here. And I think, I hope even more than that, that it’s inspiring to people, little black boys and brown girls and other folks watching at home who feel marginalized and who take some inspiration from seeing this beautiful group of artists helmed by this amazing talent, my friend Barry Jenkins, standing up here on this stage accepting this top honor."
Best Picture was Moonlight's third Oscar of the night. Jenkins also won for best adapted screenplay, while Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor for his work in the film.
