Yesterday, March 8, marked International Women’s Day. A number of musician, including Beyoncé, Madonna, and John Legend, marked the occasion by signing an open letter from Global Citizen. The letter also came on behalf of Chime For Change, the feminist organization co-founded by Beyoncé in 2013 alongside a host of other celebrities.
"Recent legislation and rhetoric have put decades of progress for girls and women at risk," the signees wrote, directly referencing the current political climate in America. "All over the world, women are on the frontlines fighting for our future. Yet millions of girls and women are still denied basic equal rights. And recent policies and appointments in the United States jeopardize its position as a global leader and positive role model on human rights. We stand together to say, in a voice louder than ever, that fighting for gender equality is the emergency and the opportunity of our time."
Other creatives who signed the letter included Hari Nef, Petra Collins, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Coldplay. Read the full letter here.
