The U.K.’s Oldest Black Bookshop Is Raising Funds To Avoid Closure

Beacon Books in London has been open since 1966.

March 17, 2017

Beacon Books, situated in north London, has been open for over 50 years. The shop specializes in Afro-Caribbean literature and artwork and is the longest running independent bookshop of its kind in the U.K. However, like many independent businesses in 2017, the modern market is stacked against them.

The owners of the shop are currently attempting to raise £10,000 in order to modernize the business and allow them to be competitive with its online rivals. This money will go toward a new website, maintenance work on the Finsbury Park shopfront, plus general maintenance work to make the shop more inviting to customers. With the help and support from members of the community they have already raised over £3,000.
