Since the release of Drake's More Life playlist last weekend, debates around grime and rap have dominated online discussion. Dave, one of U.K. rap's brightest young stars and recent Drake collaborator, recently stopped by Ebro In the Morning on Hot 97, and he eloquently spelled out the differences between grime and rap for his hosts.
"Grime is its own sound," Dave explained. "There's a lot more to it. It's like a sound, culture, style — the way that they dress and speak. Rap, for me, I go at any tempo and any sound of beat and incorporate melody as well." In response to a question about whether the two were separate genres, Dave definitely responded: "Grime must be its own genre."
Later in the interview, Dave said that "everything was handled so respectfully" when he collaborated with Drake, and said that Samuel L. Jackson's recent comment on racism in the U.K. was a "ridiculous thing to say."
