In May, Atlanta rapper and YSL signee Gunna quietly dropped Drip Season 2 —one of the year’s most solid mixtapes — cementing his place as a rising talent to watch in the bustling, powerhouse of a rap city. Premiering today on The FADER is the video for “Phase,” the tape’s emotional and deeply introspective opening track which, despite its lowkey and contemplative nature, can be heard out on any given night in Atlanta.
In the video, Gunna reflects on the changes he’s going through in his life. In between scenes where he's alone in an apartment, and later in a graveyard, he laments, “Trying to get through these phases/ Going through a phase/ Going through a phase/ I don’t want to lay/ I’m gonna to get paid/ Get my momma a raise/ Yeah.”
“‘Phase’ is a special song to me, and I wanted the video to make you feel like you are on a journey with me,” Gunna said of the video over email. “My team and I shot this video three different times, and every time I got it back I wanted to go a step further. I’ve worked with the director TeeDRay on other projects before, so when I reached out to him [for this video], he had already wrote out a treatment for it because it was also his favorite song.” It’s ours, too.
