Watch LADAMA’S Vibrant Video For “Porro Maracatu”
The Latin alternative quartet’s self-titled album is set to be released in September.
LADAMA is a Latin alternative quartet comprised of musicians from Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, and N.Y.C. Inspired by Afro-Latinx and South American musical styles, the band kicks off the upcoming release of their debut album with a video for their latest single "Porro Maracatu."
Fusing Colombian porro with Afro-Brazilian maracatu, the vivacious quartet pay tribute to Afro-Latinas. In the single, percussionist Daniela Serna rhythmically raps in Spanish about the band's native lands and taking their culture wherever they go.
Directed by María Catalina Sandoval, LADAMA breathe life into the video with black and white, behind-the-scenes footage of the quartet's recording session at their studio. The video switches up as the band takes off and parades the colorful streets of Columbia and Brazil, while Serna raps wearing a bold yellow dress, white turban, and turquoise jewelry.
In an email with The FADER, group member Sara Lucas said: "Writing, recording and filming 'Porro Maracatu' in Bogotá, Colombia, and Recife, Brazil was a collaborative and exciting learning process built on the celebration of Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Colombian rhythms. We hope that it carries listeners across borders and ignites their souls as it did for us." Watch the full video above.
