Madeline Kenney Is Quietly Ecstatic In Her Video For “Always”
The Oakland artist’s new record Night Night At The First Landing is out now.
Madeline Kenney is the Oakland-based singer/songwriter behind the Toro Y Moi-produced Night Night At The First Landing, as varied and textured a debut indie rock LP as you're likely to hear in 2017. "Always" displays her talent for writing distorted, blissful pop with urgent undercurrents, and you can watch the song's music video today on The FADER. Kenney interprets her tune through movement and stands with friends for some portraits, before they're all covered in a psychedelic goo.
“The song is about grappling with sexism and one's own power as a woman in the music biz, but I wanted the video to be a little more ambiguous and mildly trippy to have fun with that theme,” Kenney told The FADER over email. “I had this idea to use green paint as a green screen; I tend to like to get messy and weird and silly in my videos. I also wanted to bring in a bunch of lady friends (including some fellow musicians and interns from Women's Audio Mission - the only women’s built and run studio in the world where I am interning) and give them a vague direction and watch them just have fun. Ben did a great job of taking my ideas and tying the message of the song with the video.”
