Sadie Dupuis’s Josie and the Pussycats cover is officially back on the internet
We’re re-premiering her take on Adam Schlesinger’s cut, “Pretend To Be Nice” 😈😻
A few years ago, Sadie Dupuis (sometimes Speedy Ortiz, sometimes Sad13), released a cover of "Pretend To Be Nice," from the 2001 film Josie And The Pussycats, for a Father/Daughter Records compilation of songs by fake bands (which the label is now selling digitally for the first time). For reasons unbeknownst to me, it was taken off the internet, but — huzzah! — here is Sadie's fuzzy, slowed-down version of this masterpiece of a power pop song, written by Fountains Of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger, for all of our listening pleasure once again.
Sadie, who credits Josie And The Pussycats for inspiring her music career, told The FADER over email, "I recorded it in my mom's basement at a weird hour. I believe I only had a crash cymbal to drum with so I just hit different things with sticks lol. Also, the movie taught me to bury subliminal advertising in all of my songs — drink Starbucks, y'all."
