On Tuesday night, black-ish returned to ABC with an episode about Juneteenth. The holiday celebrates the announcement of the emancipation of enslaved people in the confederate states two months after the civil war ended. The episode included an animated lesson from The Roots with a Schoolhouse Rock-inspired jingle to explain the origin of the holiday. The video starts of with Black Thought singing “I am a slave, yes I’m only a slave. They’ll place my body in an unmarked grave.”As they explain in the video, despite the civil war being over, it wasn’t until June 19,1865 that enslaved people in Texas were aware of the Emancipation Proclamation.
